چکیده
We examine Karen Bennett’s claim, in Bennett 2006, that the view articulated in Linsky and Zalta 1994 and 1996 is not consistent with the thesis of actualism. Actualism is the thesis that everything there is, i.e., everything that exists, is actual. Actualism has long been thought to be incompatible with the simplest quantified modal logic (QML), in which there is a fixed domain common to every world. In this logic, the Barcan formulas (BF and converse BF), which tell us that we can change the order of quantifiers and modal operators, and the claim that everything

متن کاملA Revisionary Account of Actualism and Possibilism
Possibilism is the position that it is possible to make a veridical statement about something, which doesn’t exist. Based on this observation, actualism and possibilism can be defined in first-order predicate logic by means of one or more existence predicates. It is argued that an analogous distinction can be made in the realm of first-order modal logic, and that this distinction ought to be ac...
متن کاملThe Barcan Formula in Metaphysics
The Barcan formula (BF) is widely considered a threat to actualism. I show how BF can be cleared of such a charge by construing it as a bridge principle connecting modality de dicto and modality de re while retaining a Russellian robust sense of reality in modal matters.
متن کاملBattlegrounds of Natural History: Actualism
Actualism is a fundamental assumption of secular natural history. It replaced the Christian view of causality through providence, and it asserted an absolute physicochemical and geological continuity. Though often confused with uniformity and uniformitarianism due to secular obfuscation, actualism, at root, is a method of geology that limits historical processes and events to observed present-d...
